Avoiding the sun, wearing protective clothing and regular use of sunscreens over the years reduces the chance of these harmful effects. Sun Safety for your Baby ~ It is never too early to protect your baby from the sun. Babies have sensitive skin that can burn very rapidly. Keep babies under one year old out of direct sunlight as much as possible, either in a covered stroller or in the shade. Some sun can also be reflected into the shade so only out out early in the morning and late afternoon. Cover the skin with loose fitting clothing, such as long pants and a hat. You can use an SPF15 or higher sunscreen on exposed skin. Apply a minimal amount to small areas, such as the face and back of the hands. There is no scientific evidence indicating that sunscreens can harm small children.

Sun Safety for your Children ~ Much of our lifetime sun exposure occurs before the age of 18, so protecting your children from the sun may well help prevent skin cancer later on in their lives. While the majority of adults are working indoors in the summer, children and teens are often exposed to the sun for extended periods.
